Widespread iPhone, iPod touch 1.1.3 update problems

Since last week’s release of new 1.1.3 software for the iPhone and iPod touch, a number of users have experienced serious problems when trying to update the devices.

In some cases, the update appears to have been completed successfully, but renders the devices inoperable, leaving them stuck in recovery mode. When an attempt is made to restore the devices, one of several dialog boxes (pictured above) pops up and says the device can not be restored due to an unknown error.

In addition to user-submitted complaints and questions, many reports of similar problems and errors have appeared on Apple Support’s discussion boards. Some users have been able to recover the iPods or iPhones after deleting and re-installing iTunes or past software update files, but other users have tried these methods without success, finding no alternative but to return the non-functioning units to Apple.

Many of the messages are more frantic than this one, left by SinclairZX81: “My iPhone is now permanently stuck in ‘recovery mode.’ Restore fails with unknown error (9). Help.”

iPod Touch has a chance to become the first mainstream mobile Wi-Fi platform

During Apple's conference call yesterday, Apple executives described the iPod touch as a potentially the "first mainstream Wi-Fi mobile platform, running all kinds of mobile applications".

Apple's first quarter hit on all cylinders, as the company continued its financial run on the strength of its Mac business.

Mac sales were up 44 percent compared with last year. But the Apple's iPod sales of 22.1 million iPods was well below Wall Street expectations of 24.7 million. That's just 5 percent unit growth compared with last year, but iPod revenue was up 17 percent, so perhaps Apple sold more high-end iPod Touches than iPod Nanos or Shuffles as a percentage of its mix during the quarter.

Apple gained iPod share internationally, but iPod units sales in the U.S. were flat, said Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer.

While not specifically addressing the missed Wall Street target for iPod unit sales, Cook did say that iPod unit sales met the company's own expectations. And the iPod Touch is off to a good start, he said, which accounted for overall iPod revenue growth that matched last year's first-quarter revenue growth.

"This was the most expensive iPod we've introduced in some time," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. The company thinks the iPod Touch really belongs in a different category than the broader music player market, saying the iPod Touch has a chance to "become the first mainstream mobile Wi-Fi platform." Nintendo and Sony might have minor quibbles with that statement, but Oppenheimer's point was that you can't necessarily use years of iPod sales to chart the progress of the iPod Touch.

iTransport iPod Touch Dock Wadia Digital

Wadia Digital, maker of high-end digital audio products, has announced that it will demonstrate its new iTransport iPod Dock at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Wadia Digital, a high-end audio company dedicated to the development of digital audio technologies, is demonstrating the market’s first digital player dock to retrieve a direct digital signal from an iPod®. As a result, the audio signal remains pure and unadulterated, providing CD-quality resolution from full-resolution file formats such as .WAV and .m4a (Apple® Lossless).

The iTransport (SRP: $349), which is certified Made for iPod®, turns any currently available iPod player into a high-end media server by providing a bit-perfect digital audio output to an audio/video system, bypassing the player’s internal D/A conversion and output stage. Subsequently, the audio signal remains clean and unadulterated throughout the path. The iTransport is compatible with all currently available (Q1 2008) iPod players, as well as iPhone® and iPod Touch® models.

Along with turning an iPod into a high-performance audio server, iTransport is one of the first such products to access video content stored on currently available iPods. Similar to the audio section, the video signal is made available via high performance component outputs that provide up to DVD-quality video.

Wadia Digital’s iTransport will ship in February 2008, and will be available at select high-end audio specialists and the Wadia Digital web site – www.wadia.com.

eMusic reports record holiday sales

Online music retailer eMusic -- which claims the second spot place behind Apple iTunes Store in the ranks of digital music services -- said that it had a banner holiday season for 2007. It surpassed its forecasts by 100 percent end ended the year with more than 400,000 paid subcribers.

On Christmas Day, eMusic counted nearly 500,000 song downloads. It currently has more than three million tracks from more than 20,000 labels -- the largest catalog of independent music available for purchase and download on the Internet, according to the company. Since it started in 2003, eMusic has sold more than 177 million music downloads and about 50,000 audiobooks (audiobooks are a very recent addition to the company's catalog).

eMusic operates on a subscription basis -- users pay a monthly fee, which enables them to download a set number of songs per month, depending on how much they pay. But unlike Windows DRM-based music subscription services like Napster, eMusic sells all of its music in MP3 format, eschewing any sort of Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology, so once you download a song, it's yours to keep, and it works on the Mac, PC, iPod, iPhone and any other MP3-capable device.
