Cloud offers iPod touch WiFi

UK wireless network operator The Cloud is introducing a £3.99 per month WiFi tariff for iPod touch users.

Access will be available at the network's thousands of hotspots across the UK. From October 1, users will be able to use their iPod touch to access the internet and Apple's iTunes WiFi Store through The Cloud.

The new Wi-Fi service, called Cloud Unlimited Music, will be available from Monday 1st October 2007 for £3.99 per month, specifically for iPod touch, and is not subject to any minimum term contract.

Owen Geddes, group director of business development at The Cloud, said: “We believe this is a significant step forward in making music, podcasts and video available when, and wherever, people really want it. iPhone users will soon be able to make the most of our WiFi network with O2 and The Cloud when the iPhone is introduced in November, and we want to make sure people who have the WiFi-enabled iPod touch are able benefit from our network of over 7,500 hotspots, too.”

iPod Touch users need to sign-up for the service where they can register their individual device for use on The Cloud’s network across the UK and pay for the service.

Once a user has registered their device, they are able to connect to any The Cloud Wi-Fi network without complicated usernames and passwords. The service is being introduced in the UK first, becoming available in other European markets shortly.

iTunes 7.4.3 for Windows released with iPod Touch issue fixed

Apple today released iTunes 7.4.3 for Windows, the latest update to the company’s jukebox software. According to the release notes and an Apple support document, iTunes 7.4.3 addresses issues concerning “the initial setup of the iPod touch on some international versions of Windows.”

The issue is that when syncing to a non-English version of Windows XP or Vista, the iPod touch was not activated successfully. The iPod touch would just display the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

The download weighs in at 49MB and is available through Apple’s Software Update utility and from Apple’s website.

iPod touch software v1.1.1 released in iTunes

In addition to updates for both the iPhone and iTunes, Apple today released iPod touch software v1.1.1. The official release notes from Apple, lists only “bug fixes”. However Apple support discussion forum users are reporting that the update attempts to alleviate the “negative black” screen issue.

Also according to an Apple support document, the update may also be connected to iTunes 7.4.3 and issues regarding the initial setup of the iPod touch on some non-English versions of Windows. The update is a 150MB download and is available now through the update feature in iTunes.

How to update iPod touch software to 1.1.1
1. Make sure you have an Internet connection and have installed iTunes 7.4 or later from www.apple.com/itunes. Apple recommends using the latest version of iTunes.
2. Connect iPod touch to your computer.
3. In iTunes, select iPod touch in the source list and click the Summary tab.
4. Click "Check for Update." iTunes tells you if there's a newer version of the iPod touch software available.
5. Click Update to install the latest version of the software. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update process.

You can verify the software version installed on the iPod touch by choosing Settings > General > About.

iPod Touch Hacking: Apple issues notice

The iPod touch hacking effort seems to have hit a road block with Apple issuing a take down notice to the ISP where the iPod Touch code was being hosted. The story begins with a hardware hacking expert by the name "Martyn", finding an iPod touch whose screen had been smashed, from a lady.

Since the unit was not covered under Apple Care, the lady swapped the dead iPod touch for a nice pretty iPod nano. Martyn took the smashed touch back and extracted its chips.

He was planning to dive in and download every bit of code on it in the increasingly complicated effort to put 3rd party applications on the iPod touch. He wasn't planning on releasing the code to the public, but he did plan to upload the code to a secured area of his site in order to let the other touch hackers have a crack at it.

But even before his upload finished, his ISP showed up, with a takedown notice in hand. Apple had somehow found his site, had contacted his ISP, and let them know that it would be against copyright law for him to upload that code to the Internet.

Martyn wasn't interested in breaking the law (and it would be illegal to share that code), so he pulled the page off. But what's amazing here is how fast Apple moved on this. It seems that they've got someone listening in on the development wiki. [Source:tuaw]

Starbucks to give away free Apple iTunes songs

"Starbucks Corp. plans to give away 50 million free digital songs to customers in all of its domestic coffee houses to promote a new wireless iTunes music service that's about to debut in select markets," Elizabeth M. Gillespie reports for The Associated Press.

"From Oct. 2 to Nov. 7, baristas in the company's more than 10,000 U.S. stores will hand out about 1.5 million 'Song of the Day' cards each day. The cards can be redeemed at Apple Inc.'s online iTunes Store," Gillespie reports. "Thirty-seven artists with featured songs include Paul McCartney and Joni Mitchell -- the first two to sign on with Starbucks' Hear Music label -- along with Joss Stone, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Annie Lennox and Band of Horses."

"Also on Oct. 2, Starbucks will start selling iTunes digital release cards that allow a full album of music and bonus material to be downloaded online," Gillespie reports. "Starbucks also will offer a limited-edition reloadable purchasing card that includes two free iTunes downloads when customers register their cards online."

"Earlier this month, Starbucks and Apple announced a partnership that will allow users of Apple's iPhone and new iPod Touch to download songs playing in a Starbucks shop directly to their portable devices," Gillespie reports.

"The coffee chain's icon will light up on the iPhone or iPod Touch whenever a user is within range of a Starbucks shop's Wi-Fi signal. People with the devices -- or a laptop with iTunes software -- will also be able to use the signal for free to browse and buy other iTunes music. The service will launch at 600 Starbucks shops in Seattle and New York on Oct. 2, then roll out in San Francisco in early November," Gillespie reports. "Starbucks plans to have the service up and running in a quarter of its stores by the end of next year and in all U.S. stores with wireless networks by the end of 2009."

Mossberg reviews iPod touch as ‘A great media player’

Walter S. Mossberg from The Wall Street Journal has reviewed the iPod Touch describing it as ‘A great media player’. "Like earlier iPods, the Touch is elegant and capable, and works smoothly with Apple’s free iTunes software for Windows and Macintosh PCs, as well as with its computer-based online iTunes Store, which sells far more downloaded songs and TV shows than any other legal outlet," Mossberg reports.

"Not only that, but the Touch introduces a mobile version of the iTunes store. It’s called the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, and it allows you to buy, right on the iPod, any of six million songs for the same price you’d pay on a computer. This portable store will soon be made available on the iPhone as well."

"For all its beauty and functionality, the Touch has some quirks and downsides. It’s the first iPod model I’ve ever tested that fell significantly short, in my tests, of Apple’s battery-life claims [just under17 hours for music and just over 4 hours for video vs. Apple's claimed up to 22 hours and up to 5 hours]," Mossberg reports.

"In my tests, music and video playback went perfectly, and so did viewing photos. The Wi-Fi functions, including the Web browser, a YouTube video viewer and the new mobile store, also worked perfectly," Mossberg reports.

The most important comments in Mossberg' review is about the iPod Touch display issues that some early iPod touch users have been reporting. Mossberg says, "Also, some early iPod Touch units have had defective screens, where images appeared too dark. Apple says this problem affected a small number of units and is being remedied. My two test units displayed beautiful images."

Apple's new iPod touch "is a great media player, and the iPod remains the best end-to-end portable solution for playing and purchasing music and video," Mossberg reports.

iPod Touch home button double-click feature

One of the good feature of the iPod Touch that the iPhone lacks is the ability to double-click the Home or the tactile button to bring the iPod controls.

Pressing the only tactile button on the player twice makes music controls appear over whatever screen mode you happen to be in—Safari, YouTube, or whatever.

Even if the player is locked, double-clicking will bring up a set of music controls that features track information, play/pause, forward and backward within a playlist or album, a Music button to take you directly to the Now Playing screen, and a Close button to escape.

This function works even if the screen has timed out and gone black, and it's a great quick way to skip that song you hate or pump up the volume on the one you love.

iPod touch features multiple keyboards with multi-language support

The iPod Touch keyboard functionality is far more robust & superior than the iPhone’s keyboard.

iPod touch provides keyboards in 14 different languages, and supports the following
keyboard formats:
- QWERTY
- QWERTZ
- AZERTY
- QZERTY
- Japanese IME

In addition, the iPod touch provides the ability to make two or more keyboards available simultaneously. If more than one keyboard is turned on you can tap a special icon to switch keyboards while you’re typing. Apple says “When you tap the symbol, the name of the newly active keyboard appears briefly.”

Another interesting feature is that the iPod touch’s keyboard allows you to quickly type a period by double-tapping the spacebar.

iPod touch also has keyboard dictionaries for English (both U.S. and U.K.), French, and German. If you’re typing on a keyboard set to one of those languages, iPod touch uses the corresponding dictionary to suggest a correction when it appears that you’re
misspelling a word, or to predict the word you’re currently typing. The suggested correction or prediction appears just above or below the word you’re typing.

ezView iPod Touch Leather Case from ezGear

ezView iPod Touch Leather Case from ezGearThe ezView iPod Touch Leather case is result of months of market research and testing to develop the best, most functional case for multimedia devices. ezGear looked at every aspect of the case in designing this new product - Form Factor, Utility, Protection and Useful Extra Features – to develop a case the meets or exceeds your needs.

The slim profile of the leather case reduces extra bulk, while the Velcro band allows the ezView to act as a stylish stand. Two low profile rubber feet keep the iPod touch case from slipping on any surface. Early tests without these rubber feet showed that the case would slide on airplane trays or when you press the clickwheel.

With the ezView stand in place, you no longer have to hold your iPod touch in your hand to watch videos or view what is playing. And unlike other manufacturers' products, you never have to remove your music player from the case to access the controls or the data port. Just another example of how ezGear makes things easy.

Price: $39.99 USD

1. High Grade Leather
2. Clear Screen Protector

iPod touch having display issues

There is a huge forum thread that has been going on for a couple of days now on the Apple support forum where the iPod touch users have been complaining about its display.

The problem that the users are reporting is that the iPod Touch display is having trouble displaying blacks correctly. Their description of the problem goes like these: "negative black effect", "shimmering", "washed-out".

Some of the users claim that simply bringing a defective unit back to an Apple Store will result in an immediate swap. But some have not been so lucky because the stores they bought their iPod touch from, have run out of stock.

Check out this Apple Support Forum thread for more information

Apple iPod Touch Review: "Thing of beauty"

Here we go! The first review of the new Apple iPod Touch is out well before its Spetember 28th debut. This review is from PC Magazine giving the iPod Touch a 5 out of 5 rating.

The review says that with features like the multi-touch interface, Cover flow way of navigating tracks, Safari browser and the Wi-Fi based iTunes music store, the iPod touch is a "Thing of beauty".

Review Highlights:

  • It's much skinnier than the iPhone and it's also a bit shorter and a hair wider, with dimensions of 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.31

  • Navigation of the music, video, and photo menus is identical on the iPod touch and iPhone.

  • Possibly the best new feature is a subtle one: the double click. Pressing the only tactile button on the player twice makes music controls appear over whatever screen mode you happen to be in—Safari, YouTube, etc

  • The audio performance of the touch is excellent, as long as you chuck those lame earbuds and get a real pair

  • Once you have connected via WiFi, clicking on the lower right-hand tab on the homescreen, simply labeled iTunes, transports you to the WiFi store homescreen

  • You walk by (or into) a Starbucks location, and suddenly the logo appears as an icon on the iTune's WiFi store dock

  • The video experience on the touch is nearly identical to the iPhone experience, and the same can be said of viewing photos, with one difference. At full brightness the iPod touch looks a tad better, with deeper, darker color saturation.

  • Browsing the Internet is also a glorious experience. The "pinch and expand" motion for the multi-touch screen is more useful here than anywhere else on the player, as it quickly zooms in on the headline you want to read or photo you want to see in detail.

The bottomline: iPod Touch is probably the best portable media player ever made.

Apple iPod Touch Headphones

Apple iPod Touch Headphones
The iPod Touch headphone jack is a standard plug that accepts any 3.5mm stereo headphone connection. The jack also distinguishes itself from the iPhone by being located on the bottom of the player, instead of at the top.

Since iPod touch uses a standard 3.5mm headset jack, you can use the headphones of your choice with this model--no adapters required. In contrast, the iPhone has its headset jack inset into the unit and requires the use of an awkward dongle to accommodate any headphone other than the one the unit ships with.

In terms capacity, iPod Touch can hold up to 10 hours (8GB) or 20 hours (16GB) of video. The iPod Touch can hold up to 1,750 (8GB) or 3,500 songs (16GB) in AAC format.

Other Audio formats supported include AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV

HTC proud to share touch vision with Apple

With Apple introducing its new iPod touch in the US, Peter Chou, CEO and president of High Tech Computer (HTC) pointed out that HTC has registered HTC Touch as a trademark worldwide, adding that the company feels proud to share the same vision as Apple over touch screen functions. The company would not comment whether or not it will take legal action against Apple for trademark infringement.
Apple's new generation iPod touch is similar to HTC's Touch smartphones as both products feature a touch screen interface and share similar trademarks, some market observers have noted. This could be read as a challenge to HTC.

Ching-hung Wang, marketing manager of HTC pointed out that he does not think Apple's iPod touch was targeting HTC since Apple should put its focus on bigger companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. As for whether iPod touch violates HTC's trademark, Wang pointed out that in the past Apple and Cisco were able to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement over the rights to the iPhone trademark, adding that the question surrounding the rights to the Touch trademark would need further observation.

Apple iPod Touch Features Overview

iPod touch features the same revolutionary interface as iPhone.

Music: If a picture says a thousand words, think of what all the album art in your collection might say. With Cover Flow on iPod touch, you can flick through your music to find the album you want to hear. And when you do, a quick tap of the cover flips it over to display a track list. Another tap starts the music.

Photos: iPod touch holds up to 20,000 photos you sync via iTunes. Flick to scroll through thumbnails. Tap to view full screen. Rotate for landscape format. Or perform some sleight of hand by opening two fingers to zoom in. You can even play slideshows, complete with music and transitions. Set any photo as your wallpaper to personalize your iPod touch...with a touch.

Apple iPod Touch will cannibalize iPhone

Apple’s iPod Touch will cannibalize the iPhone. My hunch is that most folks that bought the iPhone keep the phone part as an afterthought. Take a Wi-Fi enabled iPod, toss in a browser and the differences between the iPod and iPhone stop at the phone.

What’s really notable about the iPod Touch is that it totally reverses conventional thinking. When the iPhone launched the idea was that the iPhone would cannibalize iPod sales. As this plays out it’s going to be quite the opposite.

Analysts notes are already trickling in. Here are a few notable thoughts:

TBR:
TBR believes the new iPod touch is the first instance an important new product category, the mobile content platform. With aggressive iPod touch pricing and a radical price reduction of the iPhone, Apple is lowering the entry barrier for this new type of device. At the same time, the new line of iPods will rejuvenate the iPod line which had seen revenue growth flatten in recent quarters. And direct access to iTunes will strengthen Apple’s position in the content distribution market.

Apple announced a partnership with Starbucks, through which users can used the Starbucks Wi-Fi hotspots for free access to the iTunes store. Starbucks’ Wi-Fi network is provided by T-Mobile and normally requires paid user subscription. TBR believes that, in addition to boosting Starbuck’s coffee sales, the iPod Touch will greatly increase the market for Wi-Fi hotspots and should provide a boost to T-Mobile’s hotspot business.

Bank of America:
To us, the most significant product announcements concerned the iPhone - 8GB now $399 vs. prior $599 and 4GB discontinued (likely less than 25% of mix). We believe the 8GB price reduction signals (1) unit sales are not living up to heightened original expectations and the ASP is now more in-line with other smart phones (2) possible positioning of its portfolio for a C4Q07 global (i.e. including the U.S.) launch of a 3G iPhone (vs. 2.5G now). Net, a lower than expected blended ASP likely in F2008 and F2009.

JP Morgan:
Overall, the event was largely in line with expectations with the exception of the price cut on the iPhone. This, coupled with the lower prices and higher capacities across the iPod line, suggests that gross margins could come under near-term pressure.
